The Indian Foreign Service is different from other Civil Services as it aims to recruit candidates who will deal with trade, diplomacy and cultural relations. Candidates who get selected for this service represent the country on foreign shores. They also play an important role in framing foreign policy and achieving the objectives of international agreements. They belong to the Executive branch of Indian Civil Services.
Age Limit
The minimum age limit is 21 years and the maximum age limit is 30 years as of 1st August in the year of the examination. It is relaxed by five years for SC and ST candidates.
Number of Attempts
The number of attempts made by a general category candidate is seven. In the case of SC and ST candidates there are no restrictions.
IFS Salary
Every year 10-15 candidates are selected for IFS. They are posted abroad as IFS officers in Indian Commissions and Embassies. Besides their salary, they also
get Special Foreign Allowance depending on the Purchasing Power Parity of the country. There are also perks that an IFS officer enjoys.
Roles and Responsibilities
Being an IFS officer is not easy because the job demands a dynamic individual who has good decision-making skills and who is happy to face the challenges of everyday life. Improving economic cooperation and protecting the national interests of the country are their primary responsibilities. IFS officers along with their roles and responsibilities are especially involved in promoting friendship with other nations. They are responsible for all external actions along with MEA.
